Ayetozee Work Series Part 2: I Don't Like Working So There's That

Welcome back to our weekly money chat. If you’ve been working for a while and want to know if you’re being compensated fairly, or you’re new to the working world and want to know what to ask for, this week features someone working in HR - which you should always remember isn’t really there to protect you, but to protect the company.

For me, now that the submissions are rolling in, I’m coming to realize that across industries people seem to be making similar salaries, so now I’m back to thinking about my money diaries and how people make their money work for them (or how and when they choose to splurge). Anyway, enough of my rambling, their responses are below.

AyetoZee: How long have you been working at your current place of employment and/or for yourself?

HR: 4 years

AyetoZee: If you work for someone else, how did you get the job? Was it through personal relationships, cold applying, etc?

HR: Someone I know recommended me to the Director because they went to high school together. (Thee Government High)

AyetoZee: At your job/in your industry, what percentage of people do you think are qualified for their positions?

HR: 10%

AyetoZee: What was the starting salary for your job? Based on the expectations for your work, do you think that salary is fair?

HR: My starting salary was 35K.

AyetoZee: If you have received additional qualifications during your tenure in your current position, do they qualify you for raises? Or is there a set schedule for raises at your job?

HR: I just found out that additional qualifications don't matter, as it’s for your personal development.

AyetoZee: Do you think your manager/supervisor encourages individual promotion or is it a place where you’re expected to stay in your position?

HR: They say that they encourage it, but they don't. People have been in the same position for 10 plus years.

AyetoZee: Is training available at your job? Do they pay for is or is it something you’re solely responsible for?

HR: No.

AyetoZee: How long do you see yourself staying at your current place of employment? How long do you seeing yourself staying in your current field of employment?

HR: Possibly another year, if not sooner. I doubt I’d stay in the same industry.

AyetoZee: Do you see your job and/or field as your dream place to be?

HR: I don't dream of labor, if I win the lotto I'm never working again. But if that doesn’t happen I'm fine remaining in the same field.

AyetoZee: Is there Human Resources at your company? How do you feel about them? Do you feel comfortable going to them about anything you experience on the job?

HR: I'm HR at my company, I don't feel comfortable going to my directors though.

AyetoZee: What factors do you think most commonly cause people to leave your job and/or field?

HR: Low salary, lack of organization.

AyetoZee: What is the benefits package like at your job?

HR: 50% insurance

AyetoZee: What benefits or work related things do you think can make your work environment better?

HR: Flex time and paid time off.

AyetoZee: Is salary information widely available through your job/industry or is secrecy encouraged?

HR: Secrecy is encouraged.

AyetoZee: Do you feel like senior management abuses their power at work?

HR: I think that they don't do enough with the power that they have.

AyetoZee: In a perfect world, what changes would you implement to your work life?

HR: I'd make at minimum 80K, I'd have a work from home option, I'd increase subordinate salaries.

AyetoZee: How long is the maximum do you think that people should stay at a job in 2021?

HR: 7 years

AyetoZee: What does your dream job look like?

HR: Honestly, I don't like working so there's that. I want to travel and donate money to underprivileged children to give them proper education, clothes and shelter.
